About this Presentation:

Bird populations are an important indicator of the health of our environment. Most of us enjoy attracting birds to our yards, but caring for songbirds entails much more than installing a feeder. Learn how to support bird populations, whether you live near the Coast. the Mountains, or the Piedmont. This presentation will focus on bird species common to each of the three NC biomes and bird friendly features and plants we can add to our yards to create a bird-friendly habitat. Handouts will be provided to participants.

Jeanne Arnts is a Durham County Extension Master Gardener, member of the New Hope Bird Alliance/Bird Friendly Habitat Committee, and holds a Certificate in Native Plants from the NC Botanical Garden. Her passion is native plants and ecological habitats. She is a long term member of GAONC and a regular contributor to our newsletter.

In this engaging presentation, Dr. Danesha Seth Carley introduces lawnscaping—a fresh approach to designing low-to-no maintenance lawns that reflect the South’s unique climate and charm. Whether you’re curious about tapestry lawns, meadows, xeriscaping, or just want to rethink your turfgrass, this talk will offer inspiration, science-based guidance, and practical tips for transitioning from a high-input lawn to a resilient, pollinator-friendly landscape.

About Our Speaker:

Dr. Seth Carley is an Associate Professor in the Department of Horticultural Science at NC State, as well as the Director for the Center for Integrated Pest Management. As an Urban Ecosystem Ecologist, her area of expertise is sustainable managed urban landscapes with a focus on pollinator health. Recent research programs include pollen quality in commonly planted wild-flowers, pollinator ecology along roadsides in NC, and native plant conservation and pollinator habitat establishment at historic Pinehurst No. 2 and No. 4 Golf Courses. In addition to grant writing, and research, Dr. Seth Carley frequently lectures at Beekeeper Association meetings, Master Gardener meetings, and other events where community members are interested in learning more about pollinator habitat conservation and protection. Her second book, on Lawnscaping, is almost ready for publication.
