About this Presentation:
Sherrie Hardy, Committee Chair for the Orange County Extension Master Gardener Seed Library will share with you what their Seed Library journey has been like over the past three years, going from handing out ~ 500 seed packets their first year to ~ 40,000 seed packets in total over three years. Interwoven with learning about how a seed library operates, what is needed to create a seed library, and how a seed library enriches a community, you'll also learn about the discoveries they made along the way and how their original mission and vision have transformed in a short period. Sherrie will share resources and processes that you can use as you consider starting a seed library for your organization. You'll have an opportunity to ask questions of Sherrie and other members of her committee.
The presentation will be recorded for
members to view later in our Video Library.
About Our Speaker:
Sherrie Hardy hails from California, where she was a small scale raspberry grower for upscale restaurant customers. After moving to North Carolina, she became a Master Gardener as a way to learn more about the plants she found here. One of Sherrie's passions is to grow crops that are surefire and will help her, her family, and her community be able to grow, with little human intervention, in the face of pending climate change. This passion inspired her to explore the creation of a seed library. She currently serves as chairperson of the seed library committee - a small but mighty group of 10 volunteers. She and fellow committee members will be on hand to answer all of your questions!
About the Orange County Community Seed Library:
The Orange County Community Seed Library was started in February 2021 by a visionary group of Master GardenerSM Volunteers as a way to encourage new gardeners to start planting and to inspire experienced gardeners to grow a wider variety of plants. By sharing seeds and ideas, we hope to improve our community’s sources of healthy and affordable food, and to provide habitat for pollinators and other wildlife. Educational opportunities will are provided through the seed library on seed starting, seed saving and other seasonal garden topics.
