Speaker:  Heather Kelejian

Gardens are a great connector, giving us the opportunity to build bridges to engage with others. In working in the garden together, we create a common ground, forming the foundation for sometimes uncommon friendships. This presentation will share real experiences from 18 years of therapeutic gardening through the Ability Garden. More information can be found at: https://abilitygarden.org/

The presentation will be recorded for NCEMGVA members to view later.

About our Speaker:

A native of North Carolina, I grew up in Chapel Hill and Charlotte. I have called Wilmington home since 1994. A winding path, which began in my grandmother’s bountiful garden led me to a career in therapeutic horticulture. In 2004, through the NHC Master Gardener program, I began to work with the Ability Garden. I am currently the New Hanover County Therapeutic Horticulture Agent and Director of the Ability Garden non-profit. I have an English degree from UNC – Chapel Hill, I am currently pursuing a Master’s in Social Work and have graduate studies in Gerontology, Public Administration, and Recreational Therapy. I am a member of the Coastal Compost Council, Carolinas Horticultural Therapy Network and sit on the Board of the Gardens of Southeastern North Carolina.

About The Ability Garden:

The Ability Garden, located at the New Hanover County Arboretum, features garden-based programs for people with disabilities. We serve disadvantaged or vulnerable persons and those in isolated communities, helping them improve mobility, motor skills, cognitive functions, and overall health — physical and mental. Our clients experience the joy of successful gardening and working with others in a structured and safe environment.

Our facility includes a fully accessible hands-on teaching garden, a year-round greenhouse, raised growing beds, classrooms, mobile furniture, and gardening tools.  Learn more at: https://abilitygarden.org/
